Cancer Early Detection Centre Opens at Colombo National Hospital
A new Cancer Early Detection Centre (CEDC) has been opened at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka in Colombo, strengthening the country’s efforts to detect cancer at an early stage and refer patients for timely specialist treatment.
The CEDC operates under the National Cancer Control Programme and is located on the first floor of the Infectious Diseases Clinic Building in the Outpatient Department (OPD) of the National Hospital.
The centre gives special attention to three of the most commonly detected cancers in Sri Lanka: breast cancer, cervical cancer and oral cancer. Depending on individual requirements, services include clinical examinations, breast examinations, mammography, ultrasound examinations and cervical cancer screening. Individuals with suspected conditions can also be referred to specialist clinics for further evaluation and treatment.
The services provided through the centre are free of charge. According to current official information, the centre operates from 8.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. on weekdays, excluding public holidays.
Early detection plays an important role in improving cancer treatment outcomes, as many cancers can be treated more effectively when identified at an early stage. The availability of dedicated early-detection services therefore provides an important opportunity for people to be more proactive about their health.
The establishment of the CEDC at the National Hospital further strengthens access to cancer screening and early detection services in Colombo, while helping ensure that individuals who require further medical attention can be directed to appropriate specialist care without unnecessary delay.
